After graduating form UCLA School of Law in 1978, Stern worked as a partner at two LA law firms. As an attorney he specialized in business litigation. Judge Stern served as the mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes in 2003 and 2008, and as Palos Verdes city councilman for ten years. Stern is a registered Democrat.
